Bad habits
He started picking up habits from Meshee. Meshee was a rescue from Brazil. She was the most scared dog from the pack. Today she has more confidence but when she is scared she barks like "I am going to attack you. Go away".
Donovan started learning it from her. He was just one year old and had her as his role model. He learned to be scared of people and bark. You really don't want a pit bull like to get aggressive.

First walks
Sunny with her passion for hiking started taking him for walks with Meshee. He was a handful on the leash. Pulling and pushing as much as he could. My wife was often frustrated but I didn't want to give up my buddy. She wanted to get him adopted. I understood her but I didn't want too. Meshee finally stoped chewing our stuff because she had a friend to play. It was scary to see them playing on the beggining but they were fine. It was more about the unknown of the new dog.
Donovan seemed to have some pitbull on him. That was my only concern.
Sunny then started to let him out of the leash as she would do with Meshee and everything was fine. Throwing balls for him and waiting for him to bring back so she could throw again.
Many times she would take them both to different parks. They are both crazy about the walks and thanks Sunny for that.
Soon we discovered that Donovan loved water. Yes not drinking water but jumping into the water for swimming. We would throw the boll far down into the lake and he would go like crazy to catch that ball. Meshee then started get interested in swimming but he is a champion swimming.
He soon learned the phrase "let's go for a walk?"

His name is Donovan
Remember I said nothing was easy for this dog. He was tested positive for heart worm. He contracted it and basically your heart or lungs I'm not sure grows worms and they keep multiplying until the animal starts coffing which makes them loose into the blood steam and they can clog an artery then by by.
We took him to the vet to get the treatment. The vet then asked us what is his name?
"Donovan" Sunny said. And me as a Brazilian guy was thinking Donavan hahhaha lol they laughs at me.
The treatment is to give small doses of poison so they get killed and then the animal poops them out or throw them up as vomit. There is a catch though, the animal needs to be sedated or drugged so the blood pumping keeps to the low speed. Donovan was giperactive só think... it was HARD.
We were always calling him Donovan so he learned pretty quickly. He was also potty trained which was awesome. Soon I started calling him "buddy" then "bud bud" then "Doni Bans". He would answer for any of those.
My love for this dog started to grow. He would follow me everywhere at the point that was a bit annoying. He would always want us to pet him. He would lay on the sofa with me to watch TV. That is where I am right now typing on my phone and crying a bit. I miss him so much. I wish I would cuddle him just one more time.
After a month or so he was cured and ready to run. We managed to keep him in a slow gear for that required rest monthand.
At this point he was looking better a bit heavier. His fur was shinny because of the good food but the chain mark on host neck fur was there still.

officially in the family
Donovan was very skinny. He has this rusted chain mark on his fur. He was a thick and strong dog. My only concern was that he would kill Meshee. She is big but a delicate dog as opposed as Donovan.
When we arrived home he was so relieved and happy that he was a bit annoying. He was fine with Meshee as she set the rules. She was the boss and he accepted that from the beggining. I am smiling and crying remembering all of this right now.
One thing that I will never forget is the first meal I gave to Donovan. I got a Meshee's dish, filled up with food and gave to him. Geez he was so hungry. He ate all of that in seconds like a vacuum cleaner. It would be funny if it wasn't sad. He ate like that for a few days then he learn some manners with Meshee. We got him his own dish, colar and leash.
He was the kind of dog that would follow you everywhere, sit on your feet, lay on your lap and if you lay down on the floor he would lay on your chest or sit on your head.
Meshee is more like pet me please dog which is cute but she doesn't follow us as Donovan do or try to sit on us. They are two different kinds of dog that are soon to be best friends.
Sunny then got a tennis ball we had and through it to Donovan. We had a small backyard that was big enough for them to chase each other for a bit or even for a small ball chase.
Sunny then got the ball and through it into the backyard and ask Donovan to chase the ball. Believe it or not he didn't know what to do with that. He had never played with a ball before. I don't remember exactly but after three or four attempts he was in love. In love with the ball chase game. He was obsessed with balls since.

This is a newer video though
Out of the shelter
Nothing was easy with Donovan. After getting into the cage and feeling the dog I said "We need to take him out of here and Meshee will love to have company". Sunny agreed and we went to the front desk and asked them to give us the dog back. The dog was there for two or three days and he was taken by Sunny herself so we tough "Just undo the deal and we take the dog home ". Noooooo
They were making us wait for many days and we were scared that he would get put down.
Suddenly in the shelter we had this lady passim by the cage and she was amazed that we were inside the cage and the dangerous sign was at the door. She was a rescuer and she would take the dogs that were about to be killed to give them a chance. She was the only chance for us to get this dog out of there ASAP. This Lady let my wife get registered as a foster parent and then we could get this transaction done.
We officially had Donovan.

Rescued from the park
Man I gotta tell you. Sunny was overwelmed with the new dog at home. He was a hand full. He had no manners whatsoever. He would jump on her scratch her arms back. He just wanted to show appreciation I think but he was strong a Brutus :)
After a night or two she was done and found this shelter. She called me again and said "I am taking this dog to the shelter. It is a NO KILL shelter. ".
I never give up on anything so I was having a hard time letting the dog go even though I have never met him. I felt she was about to loose it so I said "ok babe do it and we can visit him when I come back and see how he does with Meshee"
Long story short, treated like shit he got aggressive agains the shelter people so they added a sign to his cage that was saving "Aggressive" in bold letters. Soon we found out that they would kill him soon.
We ask to get into the cage. I was kind of scared and thinking "if he bites me they will put him down" so I was feeling him before getting in and guess what happened? He laid on his back and let me pet his belly. That was my first time seen this dog but I was with my wife Sunny into the cage. The stupid people were like wow he is a different dog.
